Various Interior Work

Back to 85

Built in the early 80s by Street Machine's tech editor Colin Burnham and then featured in the December 1985 issue, this 1968 bug was an inspirational VW for many and is recognised as one of the UK's first British Cal looks. Now owned by Russell Ritchie and restored from the ground up by The Paintbox, we were drafted in to bring the interior back to life exactly how Colin originally had it. This included a grey wool cloth headliner, black carpets, restore the front and rear interior panels using 3mm birch face ply with the original cloth inserts (cleaned) & new black PVC. We also reinstalled the original factory sliding sunroof which included adjusting, setting up, and realigning with many new parts.

I started my business as an auto trimmer (coach trimmer) in 1970, when I could not find anybody to do an interior of my own car to the standard I wanted. Based in the coastal town of Leigh-on-sea, Essex, along with my son Louis, we have built up a family run business of car interior trimming & upholstery, fabricating, restoring and customising. Although we specialise in Volkswagen (VW) interiors, we undertake any make or model of car from a simple seat repair to a full retrim or custom camper conversion. View our full list of services here.

With a combined experience of over 70 years, our work has frequently won Best Of Show and Best Interior at many of the major events such as the Volksworld Show, Bug Jam, VW Action and many more VW, custom, classic and modified car shows. We've also had well over 100 features & cover cars in Ultra VW, Volksworld, Hot VWs, Super VW, Performance VW, Customs Car, Street Machine and many many more.

Split Screen & Bay Window Campers, Beetles, Karmann Ghias, Type 3, T25, T4 & T5 vans and Golfs, as well as Audi, Porsche, other VAG, non VAG, Classic, Hot Rod, Custom and Modified cars. All work carried out on seats, door panels, carpets, headliners and hoods are undertaken with an extensive selection of leather, vinyl, pvc, alcantara, plaid, tweed, wool cloth, carpet (including square weave) and mohair.

Check out the gallery for all our recent work & projects. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, twitter & tumblr

Back To The Future

It all started in the winter of 1988/89 at the age of 18 when Louis built built his first car, a 1967 lemon yellow Cal Looker which was a feature cover car in the June '89 edition of Volksworld Magazine. Although it was no show winner it did receive a fair bit of attention at the time due to the overall concept of following the colour scheme from the outside right through to the inside.

Fast forward 22 years and just after hitting the big 4 0 midlife crisis mark in 2011, and with New Beetle's being fairly cheap now, he thought it would be great to recreate the concept, but with a future retro twist.

1967 'Stitch Up' Race Car

As Bernard had a lifelong love of Gasser-style race cars, ‘Stitch Up’ debuted in 2005 with a completely new engine, new paint, new graphics, new trim and even new wheels. Bernie's long term ambition was also achieved by getting it into the 10s just weeks before his 60th birthday. At that time he then said he wanted to run a 9' by the time he was 65 which was achieved but a few months late. To date the car has run a best of 9.78 @135 MPH
